My Non-Toxic, Low-Tech, Must-Have Household Implements

Well, there’s no way I can claim this post has anything to do with the North Shore; but it does have to do with things you use in a home – so that counts, right?  I couldn’t help myself.  I love these two things so much, I had to share.
“Zip-It” is an 18″ piece of [...]

What’s wrong with this car?

A little story. Mike & I stopped for lunch at the 99 Restaurant in Salem on Sunday. We left & got into our Subaru wagon, and when Mike put the key in the ignition – the car horn started blaring. Since we weren’t aware we had a security system, we frantically searched for a way [...]

On The North Shore, Everything's Coming Up Spring

No doubt about it, Spring is here! Everywhere you look, trees, shrubs, and bulb flowers are in bloom. Leaves are forming on the trees, and the lawns have turned green. The squirrels dug up and moved most of my bulbs, so they’re coming up in all sorts of places I didn’t expect. Serendipity. In downtown [...]

Spring's Coming To The North Shore. Really.

What a week!  We, along with much of the North Shore, lost our power in the wet and windy storm last Thursday. From Thursday through Saturday evening we had no electricity and no heat.   At least the temperatures weren’t below freezing, but a couple of 40-something degree nights and days, and the cold really started to seep in.  Trees, tree [...]

North Shore: Winter Wonderland?

Remember that first snow fall in December?  Everyone was waxing poetic on Twitter and Facebook (including me) about the beauty, the quiet, the peace, etc., etc. of the snow.  Now it’s mid-January and today I’m looking out my window in Beverly at six inches of heavy, slushy, wet snow.  The only sounds I hear are of [...]

Here's to a New North Shore Year

Now that the excitement of the holidays is over, we have arguably the two bleakest months of the year to look forward to.  I, like countless others, have been taking stock of the past year and making some resolutions for the new one.  Last year, the year of the “Great Recession”, was challenging  for many of us.  [...]

Ten Things I'm Thankful For This Thanksgiving

#1  My husband, Mike, whose endless patience and willingness to load the dishwasher (among other things) is much appreciated.
#2   My three pets – Casey, Tobey, and Henry, who can always make me laugh.
#3  That we made it through this year of recession with our senses of humor mostly intact.
#4  That my sister-in-law finished her second [...]

Goodbye to October

As we leave October, and the leaves are rapidly falling from the trees, I look back with pleasure upon this colorful month. Salem, Halloween capitol of the world, had a warm night to celebrate, as did all the little Trick or Treaters. Goodbye, October. I’ll miss you.

Monday Morning Walk to Lynch Park

It looked so beautiful out this morning, that I couldn’t resist slipping the leash on Casey and taking a walk to Lynch Park.  I was pleasantly surprised at how warm it was, considering yesterday’s bizarre weather.  After Labor Day, dogs are allowed in the park on leash, so it was a real treat.  Chatted with [...]

Coyotes and Turkeys and Deer – Oh My!

As an amateur naturalist, I’ve spent a great deal of time over the years slogging through bogs, woodlands, and swamps, and countless hours watching and waiting for glimpses of wild animals.  Now, however, with the shrinking of their habitat, the animals seem to be finding me here in suburbia.  In the past few years, I’ve [...]
